Darth Maul is set to return for a new Star Wars animated project! Lucasfilm has confirmed they are developing a new series titled Star Wars:Maul - Shadow Lord, with Sam Witwerreturning to voice the fan-favorite Sith survivor.

The announcement dropped during Star Wars Celebration Tokyo, at the end of a 20-year retrospective video celebrating Lucasfilm Animation. As the montage wrapped, a final shot teased what’s clearly part of the upcoming Maul series.

Immediately after, Dave Filoniand Lucasfilm VP of animation Athena Portillo took the stage to confirm that the red-faced, horn-crowned menace is getting his own show.

Here’s the official setup: “After the Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. In a new series set after the events of the final season of The Clone Wars, Maul rises again to lead the underworld factions.”

Witwer, who’s voiced Maul across multiple Star Wars projects likeThe Clone Wars, Rebels, and even Solowas there in person for the announcement. He confirmed the story is set roughly a year after his character’s brutal showdown with Ahsoka.

“He’s dusting himself off a bit,” Witwer said. “We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”

Athena Portillo added that fans will finally get to dig deeper into who Maul really is. “Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine.

“I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”

Maul’s journey from one-note villain to complex underworld tactician is one of the most unexpected character arcs in the Star Wars universe.

After Obi-Wan split him in half in The Phantom Menace, most assumed that was the end of the line. But The Clone Wars revealed he survived and was angrier, darker, and with a terrifying set of cybernetic legs. His story continued through Rebels, where he ultimately faced off against Kenobi one final time.

Then came his surprise appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, teasing a bigger future for Crimson Dawn, a future that never happened due to the film’s poor box office numbers.

With Shadow Lord, it looks like we’re finally getting that continuation, just in animated form and I’m all in! I’m excited to see how this turns out!
