Will Ferrell Swings for Redemption in the Hilarious Trailer for Netflix’s THE HAWK

by · GeekTyrant

If you've been waiting to see Will Ferrellplay another lovable disaster, Netflix has you covered. The streamer has released a new trailer for The Hawk, a comedy series that casts Ferrell as a washed-up golf legend chasing one last shot at greatness, even if almost everyone around him thinks his best days are long behind him.

The series centers on Lonnie Hawkins, who was once the biggest name in golf but now finds himself struggling to stay relevant as age catches up with him. His dream of completing golf's Grand Slam is still alive, though, and he's determined to prove he has one more championship run left in him.

The official synopsis reads: “Lonnie Hawkins, 2004’s No. 1 golfer, struggles on the back nine of his career to recapture his magic. His body says retire, but his heart says he’s not done yet.

“His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf’s new golden boy, know he’s through. But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history.”

The trailer makes it pretty clear that Lonnie hasn't lost any of his confidence, even if his golf game has seen better days.

Set to a gloriously over-the-top '80s glam rock anthem, the preview builds toward a showdown between Lonnie and his son Lance, played by Jimmy Tatro, who has become golf's newest superstar. Before stepping up to the tee, Lonnie decides the traditionally quiet atmosphere of a golf tournament could use a little more energy.

He tells the crowd: “Now, I know it’s etiquette to be quiet out of respect, but what do you say today we make some f*cking noise?”

The fans don't disappoint. The gallery erupts into chants of "balls deep" as Lonnie launches his drive down the fairway, setting the tone for the kind of outrageous comedy Ferrell fans have come to expect.

Joining Ferrell and Tatro is a terrific supporting cast that includes Molly Shannon, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby.

The PGA Tour is producing the project, while Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor serve as executive producers through Gloria Sanchez Productions. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue executive produce for T-Street.

Whether you're a golf fan or just enjoy watching Will Ferrell throw himself headfirst into wonderfully ridiculous situations, The Hawk looks like it has plenty of laughs lined up. A comeback story mixed with sports comedy and Ferrell's signature brand of chaos sounds like a fun combination.

The Hawk premieres on Netflix on July 16.
