First Look at Martin Scorsese's WHAT HAPPENS AT NIGHT Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantApple Original Films has dropped the first image from What Happens at Night, the upcoming supernatural thriller from Martin Scorsese, and it already feels like something worth keeping a close eye on.
The project is officially in production, pairing Scorsese once again with Leonardo DiCaprio, while Jennifer Lawrence steps into the mix for what sounds like a haunting and intimate story.
The film centers on a married American couple who head to a remote, snow-covered European town with plans to adopt a child. That simple premise quickly takes on a more unsettling tone, with the story described as dream-like and layered with tension.
Alongside DiCaprio and Lawrence, the film also stars Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Mads Mikkelsen, which is a great lineup of talent.
The screenplay comes from Patrick Marber, adapting the novel by Peter Cameron. Scorsese is directing and producing through Sikelia Productions, continuing his long-running creative partnership with DiCaprio.
Their previous collaboration, Killers of the Flower Moon, earned ten Oscar nominations and reinforced that the duo still knows how to deliver gripping, character-driven stories.
For Apple Original Films, this is another high-profile project in a growing slate. Lawrence has already worked with the studio on films like Causeway and Bread & Roses, and she’s also set to lead and produce the upcoming mystery The Wives.
The description of the book reads:
“An unnamed American couple travels to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.
“On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer.
“Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”
With production now underway, it likely won’t be long before we get more glimpses into what this story is really hiding beneath the surface. For now, we’ve got this first look.
