Netflix Makes KPOP DEMON HUNTERS 2 Official and the Hunt Is Back On
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantWe knew this was coming, bu Netflix has finally made it official. A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is happening. Honestly, that announcement probably surprises no one.
The animated action musical exploded when it dropped this past summer, becoming Netflix’s most-watched movie ever while also launching a wildly popular soundtrack and landing a couple of Oscar nominations.
Still, it’s great to hear the confirmation. The first film delivered a wildly entertaining mix of K-pop spectacle, supernatural action, and lovable characters, and fans have been hoping to see where their story goes next.
The upcoming KPop Demon Hunters 2 will once again bring back Sony Pictures Animation along with the creative team behind the original. Co-creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to guide the sequel, and they know the expectations are sky-high after the success of the first film.
Kang shared her excitement in Netflix’s announcement, saying:
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
That comment hints at something bigger than just one follow-up film. According to Variety, the sequel also marks the start of a new exclusive multi-year deal between Kang, Appelhans and Netflix focused on animated projects.
That deal opens the door for more stories set in the same universe, though what form that might take hasn’t been revealed yet.
Right now the sequel is still in early development. Reports suggest the creative team will focus more fully on the project after awards season wraps up. The original KPop Demon Hunters is heading into the Oscars with nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”
If you watched the movie, you already know that song sticks in your head immediately. It’s also set to be performed live during the ceremony on March 15, which means the Huntr/x anthem is about to get another massive spotlight.
As for when fans might actually see KPop Demon Hunters 2, there’s a little debate. Variety mentioned a hopeful 2029 release window, but other outlets note that animation at this scale takes years to complete. Since development has just begun, the timeline could shift depending on how production unfolds.
Either way, the hunt is officially back on. The first film built a world full of music, monsters, and heroics that felt perfect for more adventures. Now that the sequel is locked in, it’s only a matter of time before the next chapter of KPop Demon Hunters cranks the volume even higher.
