Kevin Feige Teases AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Will Deliver Marvel Moments Fans Have “Always Dreamed Of”

Marvel Studios is still keepingAvengers: Secret Wars under heavy wraps, but Kevin Feige just dropped one of the most interesting clues yet about what Marvel has planned for the massive MCU event.

Rather than bringing one specific version of Secret Wars to the screen, Feige says Marvel will pull from its enormous comic book history to create something new. More importantly, the movie is being built around character combinations and Marvel moments that fans have wanted to see for years.

The new tease comes from Feige’s foreword for Marvel Comics’ rerelease of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s acclaimed 2015 Secret Wars storyline.

While discussing how the comic reshaped the Marvel Universe into "something new, seamlessly picking up where the old universe left off, but branching out in all-new, all-different directions," Feige explained that Marvel Studios follows a similar philosophy when adapting comics.

"We pick and choose from Marvel's rich, nearly 90-year comics history and make movies that honor the source but become something entirely different. That cycle continues as we head toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe's own version of Secret Wars.

“Like Loki gathering up branches of the timeline at the end of all things, we'll pick up the threads of Hickman and Ribic's run and all those who came before and weave a new story inspired by the vast tapestry of our comics and films."

There have been multiple versions of Secret Wars in the comics, and it sounds like the MCU movie won’t be tied exclusively to one of them. Marvel can grab characters, concepts, conflicts, and imagery from different eras while mixing them with everything the MCU has already established.

Considering how much Marvel history is potentially on the table, that gives the filmmakers a ridiculous toy box to play with.

Feige also teased the kind of character interactions fans can expect, while confirming the importance of Doctor Doom to the story.

"We will bring together the characters we know and love in pinch-me moments that we as fans have always dreamed of but have never seen realized," Feige continued. "And we will call on Doctor Doom, the greatest villain in the history of the Marvel universe, to become a centerpiece of that story."

The multiverse has opened the door for Marvel Studios to pull characters from across different timelines and franchises, and Secret Wars gives the studio an excuse to go completely nuts with those possibilities.

Feige obviously isn’t revealing which dream character combinations will actually happen, but we got a tease in the trailers that have been released, and his comments make it clear Marvel knows exactly what kind of movie fans expect from an event this huge.

Doctor Doom being positioned as a centerpiece also fits perfectly with Hickman’s Secret Wars, where Doom plays a massive role. How closely the MCU follows that material remains unknown, especially since Feige is explicitly describing the film as a "new story" rather than a direct adaptation.

Before we get there, though, Marvel has Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on December 18. That movie should finally give us a clearer picture of the road leading into Secret Wars and exactly what kind of multiversal insanity Marvel is preparing to unleash.
