Thanos Reportedly Cut From AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY But Set to Return in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe Marvel rumor mill is spinning again, and this time it’s all about the Mad Titan. A major villain who was previously rumored to appear in Avengers: Doomsday may have been removed from the film altogether.
But if the latest chatter is accurate, fans won’t have to wait long to see him again because he could be making his return in Avengers: Secret Wars.
According to scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Thanos won’t be part of Avengers: Doomsday after all. They took to X and posted: “OMG Thanos is not in Doomsday but he’s coming back in Secret Wars.”
That lines up with an earlier update from fellow scooper James Mack, who also claimed the Mad Titan had been dropped from the upcoming film. Mack wrote on X that Thanos was no longer involved in Avengers: Doomsday. “At least not anymore,” he added.
Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, so take it with the appropriate grain of salt. Until we hear something official, this all lives squarely in rumor territory.
Thanos, who served as the central antagonist of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, was last seen in Avengers: Endgame. The primary timeline version of the character met his end early in the film when Thor executed him after discovering that he had destroyed the Infinity Stones to prevent anyone from reversing the Snap.
Later in the movie, a 2014 variant of Thanos entered the present timeline and took center stage as the main villain. That version was ultimately defeated by the combined forces of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and their allies.
Since then, alternate versions of Thanos have popped up in Marvel’s animated What If…? series, but we haven’t seen him in live-action since Endgame wrapped up the Infinity Saga in epic fashion.
If this new rumor turns out to be true, it suggests Marvel may be holding Thanos back for something bigger in Avengers: Secret Wars. Given the multiverse chaos that’s been unfolding across the MCU, it wouldn’t be shocking to see another variant of the character enter the picture. Secret Wars, by its very nature, opens the door for all kinds of wild returns and alternate reality mashups.
For now, Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to follow on December 17, 2027.
Both films are being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, so they know a thing or two about handling Thanos on the big screen.
Whether this rumor pans out or not, the idea of the Mad Titan stepping back into the MCU spotlight is going to keep fans talking.
