Neill Blomkamp Developing STARSHIP TROOPERS Project or Sony Based on Original Source Material
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantSony is gearing up for a new Starship Troopers movie, and this time, they’re bringing in directorNeill Blomkamp(District 9, Elysium, and Chappie) to write and direct.
Blomkamp’s version of the film will return to Robert A. Heinlein’s original 1959 novel for inspiration. The story follows Johnny Rico, a young soldier in the futuristic Mobile Infantry, a highly advanced military unit equipped with powered exoskeletons.
As humanity wages war against the insectoid Arachnids, the novel explores themes of militarism, civic responsibility, and the ethics of warfare. It’s a dense, politically charged story that’s been debated and analyzed over the years.
Blomkamp is a great choice for this project and I’m excited to see how he handles the material. Given Blomkamp’s history of blending social commentary with gritty, immersive sci-fi, he seems like the right fit for the job.
Over the years he’s been attached to several exciting film projects such as Halo, Alien 5, and RoboCop, but none of those ended up getting off the ground. Hopefully, this one does.
Blomkamp most recently worked with Sony Pictures in the racing film Gran Turismo, which I really enjoyed. He will also produce Starship Troopers alongside his wife and frequent collaborator, Terri Tatchell.
With a fresh vision and a return to the novel’s roots, Starship Troopers is once again preparing to drop into battle. What do you think about Blomkamp taking on Starship Troopers?
