Ryan Hurst Officially Cast as Kratos in Live-Action GOD OF WAR Series
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantRyan Hurst is officially stepping into one of the most legendary roles in gaming history. The actor has been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War, a live-action adaptation coming from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
The series has already secured a two-season order, pre-production is underway in Vancouver, and casting is now rolling forward.
Based on PlayStation’s ancient mythology-driven video game franchise, God of War will adapt the emotionally heavy Norse-era storyline that redefined the series.
The show will follow Kratos and his young son Atreus on a dangerous journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, the hardened warrior struggles to guide his son toward becoming a better god, while Atreus challenges Kratos to reconnect with his own humanity.
Kratos stands as the face of the entire franchise. Born Spartan and shaped by war, he rose through the ranks of a brutal martial culture before striking a devastating bargain with Ares, the Greek God of War.
That deal cost him his soul and set him on a path of endless violence. Across ten hugely successful games, Kratos carved through mortals, monsters, and gods, becoming a pop culture icon defined by raw power, emotional restraint, and a past soaked in tragedy.
The Prime Video series will stay close to the last two games, shifting the focus toward Kratos as a father. This chapter of the story introduced Atreus and transformed the franchise into something deeper and more personal. That father-son relationship will be the emotional engine driving the show.
Hurst’s casting is especially fitting given his history with the franchise. He previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination. Now he returns to the God of War universe in a much bigger way, taking on the role of Kratos himself in live action.
The series is led by writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, whose credits include Outlander, Battlestar Galatica, and For All Mankind. God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Hurst is best known for his breakout role as Opie Winston on FX’s Sons of Anarchy, a character that became a fan favorite over the show’s run. He recently reunited with creator Kurt Sutter as a series lead in Netflix’s The Abandons, playing Miles Alderton.
He should be great in the role of Kratos!
