Matt Reeves Confirms THE BATMAN: PART II Won’t Feature Fan-Favorite Character Sofia Falcone
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe world of Gotham will continue to expand withThe Batman: Part II, but not every fan-favorite character will be making the leap from HBO’s hit seriesThe Penguinto the big screen. Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that Cristin Milioti’s Emmy-winning turn as Sofia Falcone won’t carry over into the sequel.
The Penguin proved to be a huge win for Reeves’ Gotham saga. The limited series earned critical acclaim and landed Milioti the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series thanks to her fierce and layered performance as Sofia.
The finale left many fans expecting her return in the upcoming movie, but Reeves has set the record straight in a recent interview with MTV:
“Cristin is not in this one [The Batman – Part II]. But that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show. But we’ll see. I mean, I think she’s incredible.
“What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what [The Penguin showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] did in creating that character. I mean, creating this version of the character.
“It’s so special, so it’d be really exciting to do something with her. But she’s not in this one, in full disclosure, because we were so far along in the story.”
So while Gotham’s mob world continues to evolve, Sofia Falcone’s next move is still up in the air. Reeves left the door open for her possible return down the line, but she won’t be a part of Batman’s next chapter.
Meanwhile, Reeves is still crafting what he calls his “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” which exists as a standalone Elseworlds project apart from DC Studios’ mainline continuity.
Over on the DCU side, fans will soon meet a completely different Dark Knight in The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti, which will introduce Damian Wayne and the extended Bat-Family.
The dual approach means audiences get two very different takes on Batman—Reeves’ grounded crime noir and the DCU’s more fantastical version.
Production on The Batman: Part II is officially moving forward, with filming scheduled to begin in spring 2026 after a series of delays fueled speculation about the project’s future. Reeves has always envisioned his story as a trilogy, though the long wait between movies and the new leadership at DC Studios has fans questioning how secure the third film might be.
For now, fans can look forward to the Caped Crusader’s return when The Batman: Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
