Kristen Stewart Says She Would Love to Direct a Twilight Remake - "I'm Doing It. I'm Committed."
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIt’s wild to think that the first Twilight movie hit theaters all the way back in 2008. What started as a wildly popular book series by Stephenie Meyer turned into a five-film phenomenon that completely dominated pop culture for years.
Now, Kristen Stewart is looking to revive the franchise, and says she’d be more than happy to step back into the world of Twilight, this time as a director.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Stewart was promoting her directorial debut The Chronology of Water when the conversation turned toward revisiting past projects. When Twilight came up, Stewart didn’t dodge the idea. In fact, she leaned into it with real enthusiasm.
“It’s funny, I was just talking to one of my friends about that movie because it’s on TV a lot over the holidays, and I was like ‘how is that aging’, because they watch it every year on Christmas with their fam.”
She was quick to show love to the filmmakers who helped shape the franchise the first time around, including Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz, while also hinting at how different things could be now.
“I would love, look, I love what Catherine did. I love what Chris did. I love what all of the directors did with the movies, but they were so themselves and weird and kind of like squirrelly and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet, like before they blew up.
“Imagine if we had like a huge budget and a bunch of love and support, and like, I don’t know. I would love to re-adapt. Yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake (laughs). I’m doing it. I’m committed.”
Stewart’s The Chronology of Water has been earning serious praise, currently holding a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film adapts the memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch and tackles deeply personal subject matter, including abuse, addiction, and creative survival.
It seems like Stewart’s handling of that material shows a confidence and sensitivity that goes far beyond a first-time effort.
So, the idea of her taking on Twilight as a director actually makes a lot of sense. She knows the emotional core of the story, understands its flaws, and lived through the chaos of its global success. On top of that, she spent years inhabiting Bella Swan, which gives her a perspective on how that character could be re-examined through a more mature lens.
Stewart’s post-Twilight career has seen her jumping between indie films, major studio projects, and now directing. There’s a lot of range there for her to pull from. She also knows what worked, what didn’t, and what she’d want to avoid entirely if given the chance to start fresh.
A Twilight remake might still be a long way off, and it may never even happen, but if it does happen, Stewart throwing her hat into the ring to direct seems like something fans of the franchise would love to see.
