IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Finale Brings a Brutal Showdown with Pennywise and Sets Up a Darker Future

The Season 1 finale of HBO’sIt: Welcome To Derryslams the door shut on one of the bloodiest chapters in the town’s history, delivering an icy, fog soaked face off with Pennywise that leaves behind scars instead of closure. But, it was a great ending to an amazing season!
The episode doesn’t just wrap up the immediate threat. It rewires how we understand It itself, pushing the mythology deeper into fear, time, and the brutal reality of human cruelty.
Episode 8, titled “Winter Fire,” begins as the military destroys one of the supernatural pillars meant to keep It contained. The consequences of that are bad. A thick fog swallows Derry, and Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), moves fast, locking a bunch of kids in a trance thats to the “dead lights” and leading them out of town like a grim procession through the storm.
Lily Clara Stack, Marge Matilda Lawler, and Ronnie Amanda Christine chase him down, following the streak of blood he leaves behind, while the adults scramble to mount a last ditch effort of their own to stop the monster.
The confrontation escalates into a massive showdown staged on a frozen expanse outside of town. Executive producer and director Andy Muschietti describes the sequence as “haunting and magical and spectacular,” and the imagery backs that up. The fog is not just atmosphere. It is part of It’s expanding presence.
“When you see the star crashing, the talons are surrounded by this smoke. What is that smoke? That’s part of the physicality, body of this thing, and in order to see how this thing expanded, we created the fog…and the whole Pied Piper thing with IT, taking the kids for [a] travel snack.”
The entire sequence was built and filmed on a soundstage, capturing chaos across the ice from multiple angles at once. Stephen Rider, who plays Hank Grogan, said: “We were probably on that thing for a month.”
Hank enters the finale already carrying the weight of injustice. After escaping prison, he remains branded as the man who mutilated children at the movie theater, a crime actually committed by It during its reawakening after 27 years of dormancy.
The accusation fractures the town and poisons relationships among the kids. Ronnie lashes out at Lily for not fully clearing Hank’s name, not knowing that Lily feared being institutionalized if she spoke up.
Rider frames Hank’s imprisonment as something far more insidious than a simple mistake. “White people never saw him,” he says, adding: “it’s easy to point the finger when you don’t perceive someone as being human in the first place.”
While the finale pushes the series into its goriest territory, the most devastating horror arrives one episode earlier with the burning of the Black Spot.
A group of white men, bent on vengeance, torch the safe haven for Black airmen, killing everyone inside. The moment claims Richie (Arian S. Cartaya) dies saving Marge, who barely makes it out alive alongside Hank, Ronnie, Charlotte (Taylour Paige) and Will (Blake Cameron James).
“The Black Spot is really inspired by the book and Stephen King’s vision,” Muschietti tells Deadline. “What he’s trying to tell us is basically that we are capable of doing things that are as bad or worse than the monster that he created.
“We are capable of inflicting pain and hurt to each other in a way that is worse than the monster. Bigger picture, the monster is a bit of a metaphor of how fear is utilized and people are manipulated and hurt, and fear is weaponized.”
For Paige, Episode 7 is the most frightening chapter of the season precisely because it strips away fantasy. “It’s just a horrific thing to see, and it was all too jarring, the reality of a bunch of people being burned alive, a bunch of Black people, and how often this happened, It’s just a little too real.”
She continues, “What could be darker than racism, and people being murdered for the color of their skin, and children being burned alive, and just hatred? And what that does, and what that reflects about the human spirit, and how relentless racism is, and how insidious and insane it is, the banality of evil — I have so many things I could say. It’s just gut-wrenching, it’s yuck.”
Charlotte’s decision to help Hank reach the Black Spot becomes central to his actions in the finale. When Will is taken by Pennywise during the monster’s final rampage, Hank immediately risks everything to save him.
“When nobody else stood for him, Charlotte stood for him, and it’s the first time in their very short relationship where he has the ability to stand for her, and if that means that he has to die in the process of doing that, he’s willing to do that because she did that for him, you know?”
The kids ultimately manage to plant the final pillar, forcing It back into hibernation for another 27 years. The win is short lived. Pennywise reveals to Marge that she will one day give birth to Richie Tozier, the boy destined to help destroy him in the events of the It films. Even worse, the monster hints that it is no longer bound to a single timeline.
Muschietti says that concept comes directly from Stephen King’s mythology: “His experience of time is non-linear. How is that and why, that’s a whole exploration that we intend to flesh out during the next two seasons, but that was pretty much [the idea] from the beginning. The pitch to Stephen King was we’re going to tell a story backwards, and it has to do with that hint.”
Future seasons would explore whether It moves through time sequentially or exists everywhere at once. “Is he going backwards in a linear way, or is he omnipresent, and how does that affect the story that we already know?”
The finale also tightens the connections between the prequel series and the Losers Club. Will is revealed to be the grandfather of Mike Hanlon. Bob Gray’s daughter Ingrid Madeleine Stowe, who has been quietly provoking It since it killed her father decades earlier, crosses paths with a young Beverly Marsh Sophia Lillis after Beverly’s mother dies by suicide.
“I thought, let’s jump forward in time all the way to ’88 or ’89, which is when [the first film] happens. Ingrid would still be there, and Beverly would still would be there, because her mom was struggling with mental issues, and we know that she committed suicide. What if those paths cross?” Muschietti explains.
The scene was added late in the process. Without it, Muschietti says he felt “something missing.” He originally envisioned an even larger epilogue tying together more characters across timelines. “I had a bigger epilogue. I thought of four little scenes that connected all of the characters [to the prequel].”
Looking ahead, Muschietti says there is far more to uncover about Bob Gray and Ingrid, with plans that could take the series back to 1935.
“There’s so much. We’re going to learn a lot of things about it. We are going to know more about the Bob Gray of things, and we are going to know more about Ingrid, because Ingrid was around in the ‘30s. Our second season happens in 1935, in theory.
“I think it’s a pretty tragic character. She’s a very specific, very unique character, because she’s a victim, but she’s a perpetrator too. She’s tricked into thinking that her dad is still there somewhere in the shadows of that monster, and she wants to liberate him, but the only way to see him and try to liberate him is by creating all these baits [and] all this pain, because she knows that he will show up.”
Season 1 of It: Welcome To Derry ends with Pennywise being locked away again, but time, fear, and Derry are all working in his favor.
