Takashi Miike’s AUDITION Is Getting the Remake Treatment From Focus Features
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantFor some reason, Focus Features is developoing a reamke of Takashi Miike’s disturbing 1997 cult horror thriller Audition. That movie is seriously still stuck in my head from the first time that I saw it as a young adult. That movie messed me up.
The new film will be a fresh new take on Ryū Murakami’s 1997 novel that the original film is based on. This new take on the film is being written and directed by Christian Tafdrup who is co-writing with his brother and frequent collaborator, Mads Tafdrup.
The Tafdrup brothers most recently directed Blumhouse’s remake of their own film Speak No Evil, which was a decent thriller.
Japanese psychological horror film follows Shigeharu Aoyama, a widower who, encouraged by a friend, holds a fake audition to find a new wife. He becomes infatuated with Asami, a seemingly shy and delicate young woman with a mysterious past.
As their relationship deepens, Aoyama discovers disturbing truths about her, leading to a shocking and gruesome turn of events.
The film masterfully transitions from a melancholic drama to a nightmarish descent into psychological and physical madness and torment, featuring one of the most unsettling climaxes in horror cinema.
I honestly don’t see the point in remaking the movie because the first one was done so damn well, and I just don’t think another movie can improve on how the story was envisioned by Takashi Miike. But, hey… this is what Hollywood does.
We’ll just have to wait and see what the Tafdrup bros do with Audition. What do you think about Audition getting a remake?
