Christopher Lloyd Reveals the Reason He Was Worried When Michael J. Fox Replaced Eric Stoltz in BACK TO THE FUTURE

Christopher Lloyd is one of the most beloved actors in the business, and one of the greatest roles he brought to life over the years was that of D. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future franchise, although I love him as Jim in the show Taxi as well.

Now he’s opening up about all of his career moves and life events in a new memoir titled In My Own Time, and in a recent appearance to promote the book, he explained to co-star Michael J. Fox what it was like for Lloyd when Fox was cast as Marty McFly, replacing Eric Stoltz after over a month of shooting.

Lloyd said: “I remember the night before the morning of your first day. We’d been working all night for a few days in the shopping mall, so lunch would be at like one o’clock in the morning.

“We broke for lunch, and we were in the parking lot of the mall, and somebody stood up to say somebody was going to make an announcement after lunch. We had our lunch and then we all gathered around one of the trailers. Spielberg, I think, got up and told us that tomorrow morning, Michael J. Fox is going to be taking over the role of Marty from… Eric Stoltz.

“That was pretty stunning news. Because for me, totally selfishly, I felt I’d given 99 percent every moment they shot for six weeks. I had to put a lot of energy into it, and I was still getting into the groove.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to have to do all that again. How am I going to do it?’ But it all worked out. When you came along, it was a whole different game. Your spontaneity, humor, smartness, and intelligence—it was great.”

I bet it would be daunting to get through that much of a film, then be told to do it all over again with a new actor by your side. Luckily Fox is fantastic in the role, and Lloyd obviously had no trouble moving forward. They went on to make two more films, and in all, a fan-favorite trilogy that still holds up all these years later.
