Mark Hamill Praises Dave Filoni’s Lucasfilm Leadership: “He Knows George’s Sensibility”
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantWhen it comes to Star Wars, few voices carry as much weight as Mark Hamill. So when the actor shares his thoughts on the future of Lucasfilm, fans tend to listen. And right now, he’s feeling pretty great about where things are headed.
Following the recent shake-up at Lucasfilm, Dave Filoniand Lynwen Brennan have stepped in as co-presidents, taking over from Kathleen Kennedy. It’s a big moment for the Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, and Hamill seems confident the galaxy far, far away is in the right hands.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Hamill didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for Filoni’s leadership, saying he "can't think of better hands" to guide Star Wars forward. That makes sense considering Filoni’s deep roots in the franchise and his long-standing creative partnership with George Lucas.
"George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George's sensibility," Hamill said, pointing to the creative DNA that Filoni brings to the table. He also highlighted the filmmaker’s track record, calling attention to the “great stuff” he’s delivered with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, two projects that have played a huge role in shaping the current era of Star Wars storytelling.
Of course, Hamill has been part of that modern era himself. After decades away from the character, he returned as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian and later in The Book of Boba Fett, giving fans a long-awaited look at Luke in his prime.
Explaining why he came back, Hamill said: "The reason I did Mandalorian was that Luke had a beginning and an end. There was no middle... You never got to see Luke as a Master Jedi at the peak of his powers,"
He continued, diving into what made that opportunity so appealing: "He was the most idealistic character in that series. He was someone who would take adversity and double down and come back and counter his setbacks. We didn’t see any of that. So when I got the chance, I thought, 'Geez, this is wonderful.'"
It’s that kind of character exploration that Filoni has become known for, expanding on the mythology in ways that feel true to Lucas’ original vision while still pushing things forward.
Looking ahead, The Mandalorian and Groguis set to bring Star Wars back to theaters for the first time since 2019, marking a major milestone for the saga. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is currently rolling out on Disney+, continuing to build out the universe on the streaming side.
