CARRIE Series First-Look Images and Details Reveal Mike Flanagan’s Chilling New Take on Stephen King’s Horror Classic
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe first images from Carriehave finally arrived, giving horror fans their best look yet at Mike Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's legendary novel.
The eight-episode limited series is set to premiere on Prime Video this fall, and while the familiar story is still at its core, Flanagan is making it clear that audiences shouldn't expect a scene-by-scene revisit of the classic tale.
Instead, he's using King's original story as the foundation for something fresh that speaks directly to the world teenagers live in today.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan explained why he had no interest in simply recreating what has already been done.
“The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie. Otherwise, there’s really no purpose in trying to retread ground that’s been so beautifully walked before.”
That philosophy seems to define the entire series. While Carrie will still follow the tragic journey of Carrie White, this version updates the story for the social media era, where online humiliation can spread in seconds and bullying reaches far beyond the classroom.
Flanagan went on to explain why the story feels even more relevant now than it did when King first published the novel over 50 years ago.
“The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology and the degree to which violence encroaches on our high schoolers, especially in the United States.
“We had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience that could use the seeds of these characters King created 50 years ago, but express them completely differently.”
One of the biggest surprises revealed is that the series expands the mythology in a major way. Carrie won't be the only person with extraordinary abilities.
Flanagan revealed that every episode will begin by introducing viewers to "a different, unique story of a different woman, somewhere else in the world and in time, coming to terms with their own abilities." He also teased how Carrie fits into that larger picture, saying:
“Carrie’s specific place among that group of women is part of the real joy that we get to discover over the course of the season.”
That's a fascinating twist that opens the door to a much larger supernatural world than previous adaptations ever explored.
The official synopsis reads: “Misfit high-schooler Carrie White (Summer Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).
“After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”
Summer H. Howell steps into the role of Carrie White, joined by Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White. The cast also includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Flanagan serves as writer, showrunner, executive producer, and director of four episodes, with Amazon MGM Studios producing the series. King also returns as an executive producer.
Flanagan has built an incredible reputation for bringing emotional depth to horror with projects like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, so it'll be interesting to see how his vision reshapes one of King's most iconic stories.
Between the updated setting, the expanded mythology, and a strong cast, this has the potential to become one of the most talked-about horror series of the year.
Carrie is expected to debut on Prime Video this fall.
