The Russo Brothers Talk About the Biggest Reason They Wanted Robert Downey Jr. for Doctor Doom in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

It was a pretty big surprise when Marvel made the big reveal at Comic-Con 2024 that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the MCU as the villainous Doctor Doom.

Fans were heartbroken when Downey’s Tony Stark/Iron Man died in Endgame, and while there was/is some confusion about the repeat casting, we can chalk it up to the multiverse, and know that our questions will likely be answered this December when Avengers: Doomsday is released.

So how did directors Joe and Anthony Russo decide to cast Downey in the role? The pair talked about the decision in a recent interview with Marvel’s official website, where Anthony recalled how emotional it was for him to shoot Tony’s final scene in Avengers: Endgame. The director said the scene became more than what it was because of where it was filmed.

“That wasn’t a part of the original photography,” Anthony said. “We shot that pickup on the same stage opposite the Paramount movie lot where Robert auditioned for Iron Man. That pickup was very memorable for that reason.”

While reflecting on the final sequence of Endgame, the Russos said it was a powerful, emotional scene that resonated with MCU fans worldwide.

And now, they want to build on that same connection for Doomsday as well. Anthony commented, “Audiences are coming to Avengers: Doomsday with a lot of emotional connection to prior experiences within the MCU. We have those same emotional connections. So, we want to honor that and figure out how we are using that value and that emotional investment to go somewhere new.”

Downey is a versatile and wonderful actor, and I think he will bring a unique depth to this new character. I look forward to seeing what Downey, the Russos, and the rest of the impressive cast do with this story. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
