Diablo V has been announced, but it’s not coming until 2029
by Stefan L · tsaBlizzard has announced that Diablo V is in development, targeting a release in the spring of 2029.
There’s not much to go on at this point, beyond the light teasers in the trailer and a single sentence on the announcement page, but it certainly seems as though Sanctuary is finally going to fall.
“The angels were supposed to save us,” says the trailer narrator, “What survived were bleeders and rotters. Sanctuary is His! The Lord of Terror has returned.”
The announcement page states, “For three decades, Sanctuary has stood on the edge of oblivion, and we’ve managed to push the darkness back… until now. The next era of Diablo is now in development. […] Diablo V takes players into a Sanctuary that has fallen. The heroes are gone, and Diablo has won.”
That leaves some explaining to do, and while I imagine that the Diablo V team will be keeping plenty of secrets. A Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel will take place at Blizzcon at 9:45PM UK time to reveal a little more about adventuring in this fallen world. Do you have to be a baddie now?
It’s been a few years already since the release of Diablo IV pushed the game into a model of live service like seasons, expansions and more shared online play spaces. We said in our original review in 2023, “Diablo IV is almost shockingly refined, with an absorbing story and addictive gameplay. The shift to always online and connected play might turn some away, and the level scaling can make combat a little same-y, but on the whole, this is still Diablo at its best. It plays very well, offers tonnes of options for tailoring your character and acquiring that all important hunt for better and better loot will keep you coming back for more.”
We would expect there’s still plenty more content coming for Diablo IV still, but if you’re eager for new challenges and major gameplay revamps? Well, you’ve got two and a bit years to wait.
