The Elder Scrolls 6 is officially named Sentinel

Bethesda has officially revealed the title of their next fantasy RPG epic: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, accompanying the announcement with a little teaser trailer for the company’s 40th anniversary.

That trailer also featured a quote to help set some of the theme of the game:

“The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.”

– Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell (4E 206)

I can only assume from the imagery that this means that you’ll be handing in your Dragonborn credentials for this game and will instead be going scroll hunting as a fantasy archeologist or something in Sentinel.

More importantly, it means that the series will be returning to one of its original settings, with the desert region of Hammerfell having been featured in The Elder Scrolls Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Having said that, Hammerfell has featured within The Elder Scrolls Online, which has explored the various regions of Tamriel in its own particular way.

It’s good to have the quote and the enticing region confirmation, because the name itself is all a bit old hat at this point. For one thing, it’s no surprise that The Elder Scrolls VI is in development, considering that it was announced back at E3 2018 alongside Starfield, and the company has been teasing this name for years, it turns out. Fans decoded and connected the dots between social media posts and an employee number in Starfield to reach the word Sentinel, and then The Verge reported last week that the game name was about to be revealed as Sentinel as well.
