Call of Duty: Warzone shutting down PS4 and Xbox One support this year
by Stefan L · tsaAlongside the announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will be dropping support for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this year.
From 4th June, Warzone will no longer be downloadable for new players on the last generation systems, but will remain playable until the launch of Season 1 of the new year of Warzone, which will arrive following Modern Warfare 4‘s launch on 23rd October.
Given the upcoming change, Call of Duty Points bundles and other related items will also no longer be available on those systems. Then, from 25th June, the in-game store for Warzone will be removed on PS4 and Xbox One. Any existing battle pass purchases and unlocking new weapons in the Black Ops 7 seasons of Warzone will still be possible, though.
This is consistent with Modern Warfare 4 also not coming to PS4 or Xbox One – which we were already prepared for – but is slightly surprising when Warzone is a free-to-play game and relies on as broad an audience as possible for monetisation. Then again, Warzone shares its underlying engine and technology, and is themed with the main game that’s released each year, so it does make sense from that perspective.
Instead, Activision is pivoting to support the hot new thing, bringing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to Nintendo Switch 2 this year – the first time Call of Duty has been on a Nintendo system since Ghosts on the Wii U.
