Actor John Abraham met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday, just a day before the release of his latest film, The Diplomat. The film is inspired by a real-life rescue mission led by senior diplomat JP Singh, one of Jaishankar’s former aides.

Jaishankar shared a photo from their meeting on social media, displaying a football jersey with his name and the number 9. “An interesting conversation with @TheJohnAbraham on his new movie The Diplomat. As also on football, the North East and our respective worlds,” Jaishankar wrote.

Abraham, who plays a fictionalised version of Singh in the film, expressed his admiration for the minister. “Was a pleasure and honour to meet a man who I so intently follow,” he posted. “We discussed diplomacy, the North East and football amongst many other things.”

The Diplomat tells the story of an Indian woman who was lured to Pakistan in 2017 under false pretenses and later sought help from the Indian High Commission. Singh, then the deputy high commissioner in Islamabad, played a key role in bringing her home.

The film, directed by Shivam Nair, also stars Sadia Khateeb, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy, and Kumud Mishra. It hits theaters on March 14.
