Universal Studios announced that Christopher Nolan will helm a film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, the classic Greek epic that narrates Odysseus’ challenging voyage back home after the Trojan War.

The epic poem was written in Greek approximately between 750 and 650 BCE. It narrates the decade-long journey of Odysseus as he strives to return to his homeland, Ithaca, following the events of the Trojan War. The narrative delves into a world populated by gods, mythical creatures, and intricate legends, centering on the Greek hero Odysseus, the king of Ithaca.

Set against the backdrop of Ancient Greece, the tale intertwines the fates of deities, mortals, and monsters. The story begins with Odysseus imprisoned on the island of Ogygia, a decade after the Trojan War. Although the gods assist him in his escape, sea-god Poseidon causes him to be shipwrecked on Scheria. Odysseus’s voyage home is fraught with numerous challenges and dangers. The Odyssey is regarded as a cornerstone of Western literature and remains as one of the earliest literary works that continues to be widely read.

The first English translation of the Odyssey appeared in the 16th century, and the work has inspired countless adaptations and reinterpretations across diverse media, including numerous theatrical productions and films.
