Vicky Kaushal’s new historical, Chhaava, a biopic of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is witnessing an unstoppable run at the box-office. The film has collected ₹219.25 crore (India net) in its first seven days, closing out a terrific opening week, according to tracking website Sacnilk. Its Day 7 collections according to the website stood at ₹21.5 crore. The film registered strong occupancies in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Bangalore.

A press note from the makers, meanwhile, said that Chhaava amassed a total of ₹310.50 crore globally, with ₹225.28 crore contributed by the Indian market.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is an adaptation of the eponymous Marathi novel by Shivaji Sawant. With Vicky in the lead, the film also features Rashmika Mandanna as queen Yesubai and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.

Chhaava’s box-office performance has been significant in multiple ways. Currently, it is the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025, as well as the highest-earning Indian film of the year. In terms of worldwide collections, it has sped past Sky Force, Game Changer and the Telugu film Sankranthiki Vasthunam. Though criticised by some as long and overloud, as well as historically slanted, the film’s success is being interpreted as a much-needed boost to the struggling Hindi film industry, which has fallen behind its southern counterparts in delivering consistent blockbusters in recent years.

Kaushal’s biggest hit as lead in his decade-long career is Uri: Surgical Strike, which had a worldwide lifetime gross of ₹342.73 (approx). Chhaava, thus, is well-placed to overtake the film and become Kaushal’s biggest success yet. The film marks a milestone in the actor’s career, who has transitioned from the soft-voiced lead of Masaan and Love Per Square Foot to a bankable mainstream star. His forthcoming film, for instance, is Love & War, an expansive production directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starring Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor.

Recently, the State governments of Goa and Madhya Pradesh granted tax-free status to Chhaava, which depicts Sambhaji’s heroic opposition to the Mughals. Demands have also been raised for tax exemption in Maharashtra, the motherland of Sambhaji, also screen it for all legislators in India.

Chhaava is produced by Maddock films, the banner behind last year’s superhit horror comedy Stree 2.
