Farmers celebrated “Ponn Eer” festival in Kampathupatti near Pudur to mark the Tamil New Year.

Though the cattle rearing has declined over the time, the farmers of Kampathupatti village still preserve the age-old tradition of ploughing using the cattles. The villagers are still raising cattles for both racing and ploughing.

As part of the celebrations, the bulls were bathed in the village tank and adorned with turmeric, sandalwood paste and kumkum on their horns, body, tail and legs. The decorated bulls were then taken to temples in the village, where prayers were offered for a prosperous sowing season.

After the rituals, a ceremonial ploughing session was held on the village’s common land, where the village head Senthoor Pandi initiated the agricultural activity by sowing millets in the public field. The event was attended by villagers and hundreds of farmers from the surrounding areas.
