Nintendo Switch 2 officially revealed as new console confirmed
by Joshua Boyles · Manchester Evening NewsAfter months of rumours, Nintendo has finally given us our first look at its brand new console, the Switch 2. As a direct successor to the original console, it's still a portable machine and is set to release later in 2025.
Nintendo made the announcement by dropping a trailer for the device on its official YouTube channel. Titled 'An update from Nintendo', the trailer shows off the new hardware, which at first glance looks very similar to the previous model.
The big changes appear to be in the controllers, which have been slightly redesigned to be a little more ergonomic. Instead of sliding on and off like the previous generation, they're now attached with strong magnets to the large screen in the centre.

The kickstand to the rear has also been redesigned, now spanning the whole length of the console and letting gamers position the screen at far more extreme angles.
As for that big screen, we're not too sure which display technology it uses. A mid-gen refresh of the last Switch introduced OLED into the mix, but this latest trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to use the older LCD tech.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will also come with a redesigned dock. This one is much more curved, and features the Nintendo Switch 2 logo front and centre.

Nintendo once again confirms that the new console will be backwards compatible, meaning it will play most of the Nintendo Switch games you already own. Curiously, Nintendo does clarify that not all Switch games will compatible with the new console, and that more information will be announced at a 'later date'.
That's all we know about the Nintendo Switch 2 for now, but the company plans to tell us much more at a Direct livestream event on April 2, 2025. There, we'll likely learn a bit more about the hardware, what games will launch with the console, and when it's set to release later this year.
