BBC Gavin and Stacey fans left 'fuming' after final episode as viewers make demand
by Simon Coyle · Manchester Evening NewsMillions of people spent Christmas Day evening in floods of tears as the last-ever episode of Gavin and Stacey was broadcast on BBC One.
The 'perfect' episode saw characters Smithy and Nessa finally get their happy ending, five years on from the Christmas proposal cliffhanger.
The 90-minute festive episode also revealed that Stacey’s mother Gwen West was in a secret relationship with Nessa's ex Dave Coaches, and there was more drama between Dawn and Pete Sutcliffe.
However, the show left out one detail that left viewers 'fuming' at home. It appeared that the show's long-running joke about a mysterious fishing trip between Jason and Bryn were about to have a resolution—before a smoke alarm interrupted the big reveal.
It's safe to say some fans of the show were not best pleased that they will never find out what happened on that now infamous trip - and have demanded answers - urging show creators James Corden and Ruth Jones to make more Gavin and Stacey.
Taking to X, formerly Twiter, @luke52179100 wrote: "Why can’t #GavinAndStacey carry on because that was truly unbelievable that the fishing trip was never mentioned and has truly ruined my Christmas all day for that fuming."
@James_hyam93 added: im ***** fuming what happened on the fishing trip ffs" as @James_mufc19 said: "Best way to end it! But the fishing trip we need no demand answers."
And @Leahfollowsyou wrote: "End of an era. Fel emotional. Fuming we still never found out about that bloody fishing trip though".
However other viewers were pleased that they never revealed what happened and that it will remain a mystery. @Ethanwa54999793 said: "So happy we didn’t find out what happened on the fishing trip. Would’ve been disappointing no matter what it was" while @tigger1675 wrote: "What a perfect way to end an epic show! The nods and references to previous episodes, the fishing trip still remaining a mystery and the ending we all wanted…genius!"

The festive special kicked off in both Billericay and Barry as the family of Stacey and Gavin prepare for a wedding – presumed to be between Neil “Smithy” Smith and Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins.
However, it transpires the wedding is between Smithy and Sonia – his girlfriend from the 2019 Christmas Day episode – played by Laura Aikman.
Fast-forward to the wedding day, and after a series of bridezilla moments, ring bearer and best man Gavin suggests Smithy is making a mistake marrying Sonia.
After a number of the guests – including Neil the Baby, the son Smithy shares with Nessa – stand up when asked if they object to the marriage, Smithy realises he has to confess his love for Nessa.
The gang embark on a race against time to reach Nessa before she sets off from Southampton Dock to work on the ships.
Corden and Jones have both said this year's Christmas episode will be the last ever.
