Manchester Airport delayed and cancelled flights on Thursday, January 9 after snow closure

Several flights have been cancelled from Manchester Airport today while some departures are experiencing delays of over an hour after runways were forced to close this morning due to “significant levels of snow”.

In a statement shared on X at 9am this morning, Manchester Airport issued an update for passengers, saying: "Our runways are closed due to significant levels of snow, as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible.

"The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today. We will update you as soon as possible. Thank you."

The runways have now reopened but the airport warned that passengers could experience delays due to the closure.

It’s the fourth time in the past five days that the airport has had to temporarily close its runways to clear snow as the region continues to be gripped by a bitter cold snap.

A yellow Met Office weather warning for snow and ice is in force across areas of the North West until 11am today. The snow has caused major travel disruption elsewhere this morning, with severe delays on the M60 and M56, with several major roads, including the A560, A56 and A572, 'impassable' due to snow.

As a result of the runway closure several flights have been delayed, or cancelled completely. When an aircraft misses its take-off slot, they have to wait until a gap in the flight schedule, resulting in a delay to departure times.
