Coronation Street's Jack P Shepherd reveals mum's comments before telling her co-star's been 'binned' from soap

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has hilariously revealed how he broke the news to his mum about his co-star's departure, telling her he had been 'binned' from the show.

The actor made Colson Smith and Ben Price laugh as he recounted what happened during the latest episode of their podcast which was dedicated to Colson's recent news that he'll be leaving the ITV soap early this year.

Colson confirmed on Monday evening (January 6) that as he prepares to mark 14 years in Weatherfield this summer, his time as his policing alter-ego Craig Tinker is coming to an end.

In a social media post, shared to X and Instagram alongside a picture of himself portraying Craig as a police officer, he announced: "Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker's time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025.

"I've loved every single second of my 14 year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street. I've learned pretty much everything about life from the people who call it home. I’m excited to play out the exit story for Our Craigy."

Now, he's spoken in more depth about how the decision over the axe of his character occurred and the support he has received from his co-stars during a special episode of their podcast, On the Sofa.

The actor admitted: "I got told in October that Craig Tinker's time has come to an end. As an actor we're all on year contracts... I had a couple chats with you two that I wasn't feeling too confident with this renewal period, I just had a feeling that the tide had slightly changed for Craig. I got a phone call for a meeting at 7pm. The first thing I did was ring Ben and say 'it is happening, and it's happening tomorrow night."

Colson revealed that when sharing his concerns with the co-hosts, Jack thought it would be fine whereas Ben agreed with Colson that Craig's time in Weatherfield was about to come to an end.

The trio shared that Ben and Jack, who play brothers Nick Tilsley and David Platt in Corrie, waited in the green room for Colson during his meeting: "Jack was pacing, we kept looking at the door." Kate Brookes, Corrie's new producer, was waiting to meet with Colson and greeted him with: "This is going to be a really hard conversation" Colson told the podcast he responded: "I know that, I know so let's go and have it.

It was later in the podcast episode that Jack was able to share an amusing anecdote. Colson asked him: "How has your mum taken the news?" to which Jack said: "My mum was asking about the podcast and me and Ben didn't rush off to tell people that you were leaving or anything like that.

"I was with my mum one weekend when the news wasn't out and she'd been watching Corrie. She was saying, 'I think it's amazing at the minute. It's really good. And do you know who else is really coming on? Colson'. Honestly, she went, 'I think his character is going from strength to strength'. She went, 'They've brought in new officers now, there's the other coppers coming in so there's a community of coppers going on and now he can blossom...'"

When Colson asked where they were at that point, Jack said they were walking down the high street in Harrogate. "She's got two shopping bags in her hand and she's banging on about how she thinks Colson is the next big thing in the show. So I went, 'Let me just stop you right there, he's been binned!'"

Colson and Ben laughed as Jack continued: "She just stood on Harrogate high street with her bags and went, 'Why!?' and I carried on walking..." Colson said: "I said to Jack, 'Have you told your mum?' and he went, 'Yeah why?' and I said, 'I've been getting messages on Instagram..."
