Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals who is really to blame as Buffy reboot cancelled

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has candidly talked about the “uphill battle” that she’s faced.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will not be getting a reboot as planned with its star Sarah Michelle Gellar breaking her silence on the real reason.

The 48-year-old star was set to gearing up to reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers in the planned reboot Buffy: New Sunnydale, but the revival has unfortunately been scrapped.

Gellar has now opened up on the reason why Buffy the Vampire Slayer won’t be making a comeback, explaining that an executive simply “wasn’t a fan of the original [series]”.

“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him," Gellar told People magazine.

"That's very hard when you're taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé [Zhao, director].

"So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it."

Gellar added: "Chloé and I are feeling the same things. Disappointment. We don't want to let the fans down. That hurts.”

The pilot was going to revolve around an introverted high school student, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who becomes the chosen one, following in Buffy Summers’ footsteps.

Following the unexpected cancellation news, 16-year-old actress Armstrong took to Instagram to share that she was “really proud” of the project.

She said: “It doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had.

“I also want to say thank you to all the fans who believed in this new chapter, and who believed in me, so thank you guys.

“Thank you to the cast I worked with. You guys are awesome."
