Gossip site Deuxmoi later claimed Austin had proposed in April 2023. However, a source close to the pair was quick to deny the rumours. In February last year, Kaia explained why the pair kept things low-key in public. Speaking to WSJ Magazine, she admitted: "Honestly, I feel like so few things in my life are private, and that is one of the things that I try to keep as sacred as possible."
After Austin won a number of awards for his epic performance as the King of Rock n Roll in Baz Luhrmann's biopic Elvis, he told The Graham Norton Show: "It has been a whirlwind and it’s amazing because when you are making a film you never really know how it will be received. With this one there were so many ways it could go wrong so to be received in the way it has means the world to me."

In a statement at the time, they said: "Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino's new interpretation of the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. The film, which features a script by Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat), will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis' novel."
