Gavin and Stacey's future after Christmas special sealed as message on script is exposed
As anticipation builds for what will be the final episode of Gavin and Stacey, one of the BBC show's stars has shared what was left for the cast at the end of the script
by Christopher Sharp · The MirrorThe fate of Gavin and Stacey appears to be set in stone, as actor Adrian Scarborough, who plays Pete on the show, disclosed the poignant note penned by creators Ruth Jones and James Corden at the conclusion of the script. Fans have been left speculating about the sitcom's potential final bow.
On the Off the Telly podcast, 56 year old Adrian shared with hosts Natalie Cassidy, Joanna Page, and fellow cast member Robert Wilfort (Jason West) the parting words found at the end of their scripts.
During a probing question from Natalie about the possibility of the show's return, Adrian revealed: "I like what they put at the end of the script - 'The End forever, and ever. Amen'. Also, I think it's really, really brave to finish things because often I just think things go on a little bit too long."
He added, "And I think with this, the best thing they could have done was just go, 'We've got an ending'. Endings are good, moving on and moving onto new projects, which hopefully we'll all be in."
Adrian's revelations come amid growing excitement for what is expected to be the final instalment of the iconic British TV show, which first hit our screens in 2007 and features stars such as James Corden, Matthew Horne, Ruth Jones, Joanna Page, and Rob Brydon.
The finale of the beloved show has left fans emotional, and even moved James to tears. During his appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, the 46 year old actor and TV host shared: "It was a very, very special day. We really, kind of, scheduled the show so that the very last line that we'll ever hear in the episode is the last thing we shot.
"Which anyone will tell you is so rare that you ever do. Normally, your last day, you're out on a motorway on your own in a car, and people go, 'Well done,' and you go, 'Bye then.' But we really felt like we wanted everybody to be there at the very, very end, and it was just a lot of tears."
James also confessed that the final episode's private screening earlier in the week was an emotional affair as well, with The Sun covering the story. He remembered: "We had a screening two days ago, which is the first time anybody has seen it, and that was a lot of tears. It's been a very, very emotional thing to do, really."
Nevertheless, while the series concludes, the journey of Gavin and Stacey doesn't, as a tell-all book is set to be launched in Autumn of 2025.
James (Smithy) and Ruth (Nessa) announced excitedly: "We're so excited to be sharing the story behind the story of Gavin and Stacey. The show has played a huge part in our twenty-five-year friendship and we hope this book will give readers a fresh insight into how it all came about."
