'Harry and Meghan Netflix documentary surprised me so much I changed my opinion of them'
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bombshell Netflix documentary was watched by millions around the world - and one line in it was particularly thought-provoking for England rugby legend Matt Dawson
by Kasra Moradi, Patrick Austen-Hardy · The MirrorMatt Dawson once admitted that a single line from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix documentary shifted his stance on the Royal couple.
Despite being better known for his successful rugby career than his Royal commentary, the 52-year-old former England scrum-half was drawn into the docuseries about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. But he quickly found that his preconceived notions about them began to unravel as he delved into their story.
The explosive documentary attracted global attention, with millions streaming it online once the six-part series was released in December 2022. In a fascinating interview that same month, Dawson revealed how his views dramatically transformed after watching the controversial show.
"In the first 10 minutes I was thinking, 'oh no, this is like a woe is me type doc',” he told The Express. But Dawson explained how one line from Markle "absolutely and completely" changed his outlook on the highly-scrutinised pair.
The line in question came when the former Suits actress said: "The past six years of my life, books are written about our story from people who I don't know. Doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?”
Reflecting on that moment, Dawson explained: "I just thought, do you know what, in their environment and where everyone is going to have a view of Harry, because he is a bit of an adopted son to everybody after what happened in the past, I sort of thought, 'ok, go with it'.
"We all want to know what they are like, so why don't we just get to see what they are like? It is what it is, but at least it's in their voice.
"We are obviously all interested in it and we are getting those little nuggets that we wouldn't have known before, so it has definitely served its purpose. Let's separate, you know, let's not worry about the deal and what their life is now.
"We are interested and the nature of us and the Royal Family is that we want to know what is going on and we are getting told from the horse's mouth, so let's embrace it and take it on board."
