'We featured in the Gavin and Stacey finale but only found out on Christmas Day'

The Gavin and Stacey finale was filled with twists and turns on Christmas Day, even for those who featured in the BBC series final farewell to viewers

Fans sat down on Christmas day to bid farewell to the iconic sitcom Gavin and Stacey.

As viewers eagerly awaited to see what the plot had in store, some even had no idea they would actually feature in the end of an era episode. Such was the secrecy surrounding the final scenes, one band wasn't made aware their tunes would feature in the sitcom's end.

When it was first announced the show was making its last ever comeback, writers and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones made sure to keep everything under wraps. And that confidentiality went as far as not even telling musicians their tunes were to feature.

Speaking to Metro, violinist Nathaniel, cello player Sam, and pianist Zacc of Stratus explained how their song came to be used in one pivotal scene. They revealed their rendition of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know was used as Sonia (Laura Aikman) walks down the aisle to marry Smithy.

They revealed they knew the BBC had requested their version, but admitted they didn't realise what it was exactly to be used for. The band said: "Our band manager received an email in September from someone at the BBC, simply asking if we were willing to allow one of our songs to be featured on a BBC comedy. We had no idea what that was. We were just like, 'Oh, cool. BBC, that’ll be fun!'"

They went on to say it was exciting to find it was potentially to be used in the finale, but confessed they weren't sure if it would make the cut. "Even while we were watching the show, we didn’t know at what point we would be featured, how much we would be featured, or anything like that," they added.

"Towards the end of the show, we were like, 'Maybe we’re not in it; it didn’t make the cut.' From what I can gather, they were very secretive about the whole show anyway, so it was hard to get any information from anyone." The band is now hopeful their appearance on the sitcom, which was viewed by over 12 million people on the night, can work as a launchpad for their career.

While the musicians were thrilled to make the cut, one character wasn't as lucky. Gwynfor Roberts - who played Dick Powell in two episodes and was mentioned many times throughout the show - didn't make it into the final script of the festive special as writers Ruth Jones and James Corden couldn't make 'room for him'.

They added him in the original script but he didn't make it into the final one. Ruth revealed at an early screening of the special: "I think in the original script we had Dick Powell. There just wasn’t room for him, God bless him." However, she said it was 'lovely' to bring everyone else back together.
