Today, Microsoft began to conduct layoffs across the company, including at its Xbox division. As a result, it appears that Everwild, Rare’s long in-development follow-up to Sea of Thieves, has been cancelled.

Reports of Everwild’s cancellation came from VGC sources this morning. In addition to the cancellation, several Rare employees are expected to get laid off this week.

Everwild was originally announced nearly six years ago, with its latest trailer being released back in 2020. Since then, there were reports that the game had a troubled development, and that the project was quietly rebooted a few years ago.

Everwild’s cancellation is part of a larger fallout from Microsoft’s decision to lay off thousands of workers. Reports also claim that an MMO in development at ZeniMax has also been cancelled.
