Kirsten Dunst to play Alex in A Minecraft Movie 2

The Minecraft sequel is due out in 2027.

Kirsten Dunst has been cast in the upcoming sequel to A Minecraft Movie. The video game adaptation is currently in development and set for a 2027 release.

Deadline reported that Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of A Minecraft Movie 2. She’ll play Alex, who Minecraft fans will recognize as one of the game’s earliest playable characters. She’ll join the likes of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who are set to reprise their roles for the sequel.

Last year, Kirsten Dunst revealed that her kids were fans of A Minecraft Movie and joked that she would join the sequel so that she can get a big payday and “make a movie where I don’t lose money.”

A Minecraft Movie was one of the highest-earning movies of 2025, carving out its own slice of the pop culture zeitgeist on its way to earning nearly a billion dollars worldwide. A sequel was announced back in October.
