Diablo 5's 2029 release window comes from 'clarity of creative vision and production schedule'
Diablo 5 Executive Producer Matt Zitterman spoke to the team's confidence that the saga's next chapter will be ready when they say it is.
by Ozzie Mejia · ShacknewsOne of the most exciting announcements to come from BlizzCon weekend was the reveal of Diablo 5, the next numbered installment in the storied 30-year series. While there was initial excitement for the game's unveiling, there was some dampened enthusiasm when the reveal trailer ended with a 2029 release window. That's a long time from now and, in today's video game industry, a lot of things can go wrong in that time. Still, Diablo 5 Executive Producer Matt Zitterman adamantly expressed that the game would be ready for that time during a group interview with members of the press.
"We're very confident," Zitterman told the assembled press. "Yeah, I'm just going to say exactly that. We're announcing the date, calling the shot, because we're very confident and that confidence comes from both clarity of creative vision, and clarity of production schedule, and understanding of what our team can do. We mentioned this in the [Forging the Next Era] panel, but this is a Diablo team that has been making Diablo games for a very long time. There are people working on the team that have been working on Diablo for decades. And we're building on top of the foundation that we built with Diablo 4. So, it's given us a big leg up in the development process. It has allowed us to start work on the game in parallel to working on Diablo 4. It's giving us the ability to think ahead about the road to Diablo 5, from [Diablo] 4, and how we can make that player experience really come to life as we bring players from one game to the next. I think we wouldn't be here talking about the game if we didn't feel very confident that that date was the right one. I know the team is very excited about being asked to do that."
Diablo 5 was announced for a 2029 release window during Saturday's BlizzCon Opening Ceremony. There has been some skepticism over whether Blizzard could make this date or whether Diablo 5 (or the newly-announced StarCraft) would even make it out at all, given the year that parent company Xbox has had with its subsidiaries. Still, Blizzard's Team 3 remains confident that Diablo 5's production schedule will unfold as planned, also making sure to note that such an early announcement allows them to communicate more directly with the Diablo player base.
"Now that we can talk about the game, we can bring it into the game and we can start to talk about what's going on behind the scenes," Zitterman added. "We can test ideas more openly. All of that feedback in the development process, rather than at the very end, allows us to make the best possible game."
Diablo 5 is set to release in 2029 with platforms yet to be revealed.
