This week, Xbox, developer 4A Games, and publisher Deep Silver shared the first official look at the next game in the Metro series: Metro 2039. It will be the first mainline Metro shooter since Metro Exodus in 2019, and it’s coming out on PS5, Xbox, and PC in winter 2026.

Xbox had the honor of unveiling Metro 2039 in a First Look presentation in which 4A Games developers took a deep dive into what’s happening with the series. Set four years after the events of Metro Exodus, Metro 2039 still finds survivors of nuclear war scraping to get by in the underground of a ruined Moscow. The Spartans, who once traveled around helping survivors, are still around. However, they are now under the rule of a fanatical leader known as Hunter, who runs the populace under his control through fear and propaganda, and is gathering forces for a war with a new and terrifying enemy. Meanwhile, in the wilderness, an exiled Stranger faces recurring nightmares of his past, calling him to journey back to Moscow - back to the Metro - to face his ghosts.

Metro 2039 promises an immersive and deeply personal first-person shooter experience. Much of the team is based in Ukraine and Malta, and many of them have been affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including original Metro trilogy writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, who was forced to flee Russia in 2023 for his criticism of the Russian government and its invasion. The team shared that Metro 2039’s development has been shaped by this conflict. More than that, the team invites fans to support Ukraine through the ongoing development of Metro 2039. At the same time, Glukhovsky has promised that the latest story in the mainline Metro universe promises to be the darkest we’ve seen yet.

With a winter release window set, we’ll be looking for more concrete details throughout the year, including a firm release date. Stay tuned to the Metro 2039 topic for more news and updates.
