Battlefield 6 devs shuts down rumors of console-only crossplay

Where reports previously suggested Xbox and PlayStation players could cut PC out of the equation, EA has clarified that is not the case.

As Battlefield 6 looms, thousands of players are giddy to get back to the action, but there’s a bit of a dispute about the player ecosystem. Factors like mouse and keyboard controls and the easier access to cheats on PC have led to console players hoping for crossplay for just consoles. It seemed like Battlefield Studios might deliver, but a clarification from Electronic Arts says that’s not the case. Players can’t limit crossplay to certain platforms. You’ll either play with all of them or just your own platform for now.

EA made this clarification in a statement to Dexerto this week. Previously, an IGN interview with Battlefield 6 senior combat designer Matthew Nickerson and technical director Christian Buhl reportedly suggested that players on PlayStation and Xbox might have an option to turn off crossplay with PC and just play with each other. While on the interview, the crossplay toggle was shown with Nickerson saying that turning the toggle off would make the game console-only in matchmaking. In a statement to Dexerto, EA said that’s not the case. EA claims that if you switch the toggle off, you’ll only be matched with your own platform.

It's a disappointment for many. The conversation about cheaters on PC has made console players even shier about having crossplay on, especially given the generally accepted superiority of mouse controls in aiming. Battlefield Studios has gone out of its way to address concerns, even up to including a fairly invasive anti-cheat program on the PC version, but even the devs have admitted their measures can only go so far. it seems console players will ultimately have to make the choice at whether they want to play with PC and everyone else, or just by themselves on their own platforms.
