Why is the music so loud at Simchas Beis?!

We’ve heard it all week. Fair question.

In the Beis Hamikdash, Simchas Beis Hashoeiva was celebrated with flutes, harps, lyres and trumpets. The Mishnah tells us the sound of the chalil was heard all the way in Yericho. The greatest tzaddikim danced through the night, and Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel juggled eight flaming torches. As Chazal say, whoever did not see the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva never saw true simcha in his life.

For generations, by the Rebbeim, Simchas Beis Hashoeiva meant a farbrengen in the sukkah: words of Chassidus, l’chaim, niggunim around the table. Then, on Sukkos 5741, the Rebbe asked that the simcha go out into the street.

Not only the Chassidim. Not only the sukkah. The street itself. Within days, thousands of Yidden were singing and dancing in the streets, and they’ve come back every year since.

So is the music too loud? We’ll leave that one with you.

We’ll only say it’s hard to make a street dance quietly.
