Kacie McIntosh and Patrick Suzuki might have won the award for most awkward Love Is Blind season 9 breakup, but I’d put down Madison Maidenberg and Joe Ferrucci’s breakup as the most predictable. And there might just be a behind-the-scenes reason for that. It turns out, Madison and Joe staged their breakup for the Love Is Blind cameras...because they had already broken up the night before.

Madison revealed how the split actually went down during an appearance on the Love To See It podcast on Thursday, October 16. According to her retelling, she and Joe went out following their wedding dress and tux fittings (she claims she had no idea Joe walked out mid-fitting) and ran into some other Love Is Blind cast members, including Kacie.

“I’m standing there telling his two guys that were at the tux fittings that I love him. I’m excited about this,” she recounted. “They know full well what just happened at tux fittings. No one is telling me. Like, I’m literally standing there ring on my finger, like, giddy.” She then said that she saw Kacie flirting with Joe, which prompted her to check in with him when they got home.

“We go back to our apartment and I have a real sit down with him. I’m like, ‘Look, I want to do this. Like, if you jump, I’ll jump,’” she recalled. “I want to do this with you. I need to know where the hell your head’s at.”

That’s when she learned that Joe had no intention of going through with the wedding. “His face dropped,” she said. “He went totally pale and he looked me in the face and said, ‘You’re not it. I’m going to say no at the altar.’ And that was honestly the actual breakup.”

Production came in the following morning to film the breakup scene. And the rest, as they say, is Love Is Blind history.

This isn’t the first time cast members have had to stage conversations for the cameras on LIB. Remember Tyler Francis and Ashley Adionser’s tense conversation about his kids from season 7? Yeah, that was partially staged for the cameras, too.

We’ll get more tea on what scenes were staged—and what played out off-camera—at the Love Is Blind season 9 reunion on October 29.
