Snoop Dogg to Host New Year’s Eve Special for NBC and Peacock

by · Variety

NBC and Peacock are venturing into New Year’s Eve special territory again, this time with NBC’s favorite hip hop star: Snoop Dogg.

Snoop will host a two-hour musical variety special to originate live from Miami. The deal for “Snoop Dogg’s New Year’s Eve,” to air Dec. 31 from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. ET, extends Snoop’s presence as an on-air presence for NBCUniversal platforms. Snoop is a coach on NBC’s “The Voice,” and he was dispatched to Paris last summer to have a huge presence in NBCUniversal’s much-praised coverage of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

“Snoop Dogg’s energy, influence and ability to bring people together promises an unforgettable night,” said Jen Neal, executive VP of Live Events and Specials for NBCUniversal Entertainment. “We’re thrilled to partner with Snoop and bring this epic event to audiences across the country once again live from Miami.”

NBC has experimented with various options on Auld Lang Syne night. In 2022 and 2023 it featured Miley Cyrus in a music-driven variety show. Last year, NBC carried a two-hour special, “A Toast to 2024!,” hosted by “Today’s” Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., but it didn’t go up against the night’s longstanding leader, ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” with live programming in the midnight hour.

Going back to its radio days, NBC helped etch the template for the New Years’s Eve special thanks to the NBC radio network’s association with Guy Lombardo. The big band leader, known for fronting his Royal Canadians, hosted New Year’s Eve specials for NBC and CBS from 1928 through his death 1977, starting on TV in 1955. Lombardo is credited with making “Auld Lang Syne” a staple of New Year’s Eve celebrations because it was a staple of Lombardo’s repertoire.

“Snoop Dogg’s New Year’s Eve” will be produced by live event specialists Den of Thieves and Snoo’s Death Row Pictures. Death Row Pictures just inked a wide-ranging development pact with NBCUniversal as part of his dealmaking to return to “The Voice” for a second cycle as coach.

The special was among a slew of programming announcements from NBC, Peacock and other NBCUniversal platforms on Monday as the company kicked off the TV industry’s upfronts week with a splashy presentation at Radio City Music Hall.
