'We're coming back strong!' - Girl group Mis-Teeq confirm reunion
Noughties girl group Mis-Teeq have confirmed they will reunite two decades after their split, with a show in London to celebrate the anniversary of their first album.
The trio were known for blending the UK garage sound popular at the time with R&B melodies, scoring hits such as Why, Scandalous and One Night Stand.
Rumours of a possible reunion gained momentum in recent weeks, and on Friday the group confirmed they will play the Ovo Arena in Wembley to mark 25 years since the release of their album Lickin' On Both Sides.
"We can't wait to relive the magic and energy of that record and many more, with the very people who made it so special," said singer and rapper Alesha Dixon.
Referencing the lyrics from one of her most memorable raps, Dixon added: "I'm also excited for my daughters 'the Mis-Teeq babies' to see us coming back strong!"
The concert, which takes place on 12 September, is advertised as a "One Night Stand with Mis-Teeq".
It's not yet known whether that means the show is a one-off, or will be part of a wider comeback with other tour dates and new music.
The confirmation comes after weeks of speculation. Last month, fans noticed a verified Instagram account had been created for the group, which began posting old interview and music video clips.
On Friday, that account officially announced the trio's return with a video showing the three singers travelling to Wembley by motorbike - a reference to their debut album cover.
Singer Sabrina Washington said: "It feels incredibly emotional looking back 25 years later and realising how deeply our music has connected with people around the world.
"We created these records simply for our love of music and the different sounds that inspired us - from garage, R&B, hip-hop and reggae - never knowing how impactful they would become."
Bandmate Su-Elise Nash added: "Looking back, I'm so proud that Mis-Teeq played a part in bringing UK Garage to the masses, and I don't think any of us could have imagined the lasting impact our songs would continue to have.
"Wembley feels like the perfect place to celebrate that journey, the memories, and the fans who have stayed with us through every chapter."
Mis-Teeq, whose other hits included All I Want, Style, B With Me and Can't Get It Back, sold more than 12 million records, were nominated for a Brit Award and won a Mobo for best garage act in 2002.
The three-piece shared some DNA with US girl group TLC, in the sense that they were a contemporary R&B vocal trio with one member who also delivered the songs' raps.
But any similarities ended there - Mis-Teeq had their own recognisable sound with a distinctly British flavour.
The group sang in their own accents and co-wrote all their songs, and their most popular hits saw their smooth, soulful harmonies layered on top of the garage and two-step drumbeats popular at the time.
Dixon's fast-paced rhymes helped the songs stand out on the radio, and she became known for phrases such as "We're coming back strong", "M-I-S-T-double-E-Q", "Away we go" and "Enter!".
The group came up around the same time as other UK garage acts such as Artful Dodger and So Solid Crew, while hits by the likes of DJ Pied Piper, Sweet Female Attitude and DJ Luck and MC Neat were riding high in the charts.
Mis-Teeq's second studio album Eye Candy featured what became their best known hit, Scandalous, a more traditional pop-R&B song which also charted in the US after being used in the 2004 film Catwoman.
However, the group split in 2005 after their record label, Telstar, went bankrupt.
Dixon has remained in the public eye since - she launched a solo career after the trio disbanded and appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, winning the 2007 series with her professional dance partner Matthew Cutler.
She scored her most successful solo hit, The Boy Does Nothing, off the back of her Strictly success, and later became a judge on the BBC One series before moving to join the panel of ITV's Britain's Got Talent.
