Gavin & Stacey had viewers elated as the Christmas Day special offered up what many are calling the "perfect ending".

The beloved BBC sitcom had its fans on tenterhooks as they tuned in for the eagerly awaited final episode. After a five-year hiatus, aficionados of the series were keen to learn whether Smithy (James Corden) would accept Nessa Jenkins' (portrayed by Ruth Jones) hand in marriage.

Despite the 2019 special leaving fans hanging, it swiftly became apparent in the latest festive episode that Smithy declined to marry Nessa at the beginning. Instead, he was set to wed Sonia (Laura Aikman).

Yet, as the narrative unfolded with wedding preparations moving forward, it was evident that Smithy and Nessa, who share a child, harboured unresolved romantic feelings. The pivotal moment came during Smithy and Sonia's nuptials when Gavin Shipman (Matthew Horne) intervened forcefully.

Asserting to his best friend Smithy that he shouldn't marry Sonia mid-ceremony, Gavin's influence led to the abrupt halting of the wedding. In an unexpected turn, Smithy ultimately married Nessa later in the episode, causing viewers to leap in celebration of their union, reports Devon Live.

Post-episode discussions took off on X, formerly known as Twitter, with fans expressing their delight. One thrilled fan exclaimed: "This ending is perfect!"

Another enthused, "Gavin and Stacey may actually be the best show on television. There was not a single blunder in the whole show. It was good from start to finish, and the finale was perfect. This is the most emotional I have ever felt."

A fourth expressed: "For an hour and half the whole of Britain went on that journey. Shock, drama, tears and a happy ending. A staple of British heritage."

Meanwhile, another confessed: "I literally just bawled my eyes out at that. the fact we'll never have another episode of this beautiful beautiful show saddens me but my God what a show it's been. The best eve."
