Modern Family fans ‘work out’ one thing stars have in common - years after hit show ended

Hitting screens in 2009, the ABC mockumentary ran for eleven seasons before coming to an emotional end in 2020. The show followed the Pritchett extended family as they tackled marriage, pregnancy and the struggles of growing up.
The hit sitcom boasted a star-studded cast including Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland and Julie Bowen. Four years on from its finale, viewers have taken to Reddit to share that a majority of the central cast have illustrious voice acting careers.
Below, we delve into the Modern Family cast and their various animation roles.
Ty Burrell
Burrell portrayed one of the family patriarchs, Phil Dunphy and won a Primetime Emmy Award for the role in 2014.
The 57-year-old has starred in a host of animated films including Mr. Peabody & Sherman, in which he voiced the dog scientist.
He also has a recognisable role in Finding Dory, playing Bailey the beluga whale.
Julie Bowen
Bowen's character Claire Dunphy was divisive among fans, however she took home an Emmy Award for her performance in 2011 and 2012.
The Happy Gilmore star portrayed Queen Arianna in Tangled: Before Ever After in 2017 and later reprised the role for a three-season animated show.
Viewers may also recognise her voice as Lil' Dipper in Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue. The 54-year-old most recently voiced realtor Patricia Banks in the Disney Channel series Hailey's On It!
Sarah Hyland
Joining the cast of Modern Family at just 19 years old, Sarah Hyland has since had a glittering TV career. In 2011 she had a stint on Disney Channel in the romantic drama Geek Charming.
She revisited the channel in 2015 to voice animated lion Tiifu on adventure film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, reprising the role in 2016's The Lion Guard series.
Ariel Winter
Ariel Winter stepped into voice acting while playing the sitcom's outcast, Alex Dunphy. She voiced the titular princess in Disney's Sofia the First between 2012 and 2018.
Winter also appears alongside her on-screen dad Ty Burrell, in Mr Peabody & Sherman - where she voices Penny.
The 26-year-old boasts other voicing credits on Star Trek: Lower Decks, Smurfs: Lost Village and Phineas and Ferb.
Eric Stonestreet
Joining Winter at Disney, Eric Stonestreet voiced Sofia's Pegasus named Minimus, on Sofia the First.
The 53-year-old star also featured in The Secret Life of Pets as the voice of Duke, a shaggy dog that often disrupts the main pet's life.
Ed O'Neill
Ed O'Neill depicted the grumpy yet lovable grandfather Jay Pritchett for 15 years.
The actor, who is a former American Football player, is widely recognised for voicing Hank the octopus in Finding Dory.
He also appeared in Disney's 2012 hit Wreck it Ralph as Mr Litwak.
Sofia Vergara
Vergara has continued to lead a successful career since closing the chapter on Modern Family. This year alone she has led Netflix's series Griselda and featured in Jennifer Lopez's drama This Is Me...Now.
Eager viewers will have noticed the actress' voice in Despicable Me 4 as the minions' enemy Valentina.
The 52-year-old has additionally had stints on The Simpsons, Family Guy and Happy Feet Two.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Similar to Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson has been busy over the last few years. In 2023 he starred in Elizabeth Banks' thriller Cocaine Bear, in which he portrayed an animal rights activist. Tyler Ferguson has garnered even more TV credits by appearing on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Elsbeth.
However, the 49-year-old does not have as many voicing credits as his co-stars. His last animated role was the Shangri Llama in Ice Age: Collision Course.
