Tommy Fury finally reveals the truth about addiction that caused Molly-Mae split

by · Wales Online

Reality TV favourite and boxer Tommy Fury has finally spilled the beans on why his engagement to Molly-Mae Hague came to an abrupt end, stressing that infidelity played no part. In a candid discussion, the ex-Love Island contestant laid bare how a reliance on alcohol following a boxing injury was the real cause behind their split last year, while firmly dismissing cheating rumours and online gossip as "complete and utter b***ocks."

The couple first sparked up their romance in the Love Island villa back in 2019, later welcoming their daughter, Bambi Fury, into the world in January 2023. Not long after celebrating the arrival of their child, Tommy got down on one knee, but by August last year, followers were left reeling when Molly-Maeannounced the end of their betrothal.

Yet, the plot thickened when the two were caught on camera locking lips at a glitzy New Year's Eve shindig, heralding potential signs of a romantic rekindling, just ahead of Molly-Mae's new Amazon Prime series debut. Against a backdrop of rumours suggesting the break up was nothing more than a media ruse, Tommy opened his heart about the actual reasons for their separation in the past year.

"The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn't be the partner that I wanted to be anymore," Tommy divulged to Men's Health Magazine. "It kills me to say it, [but] it's true, I couldn't. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is. People go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I've got mine to bear."

Tommy shared with the publication that his struggles with alcohol began after he damaged the ligaments in his hand in 2019, leading to reconstructive surgery at the beginning of the following year. He confessed that his "mental health was in the pan" post-surgery and felt a part of his identity was lost when he could no longer box or train, reports the Mirror.

"I've only lived for training and my family, and that was all snatched away from me. So what I did for fun is I started to drink quite a lot. I found that's what made me feel better," the father-of-one remembers. "I wanted the endorphins that I'd get when I'd finish a good session, when I'd finish sparring, when I'd finish fighting."

He further admitted that his relationship with Molly-Mae began to deteriorate due to his "black-out drunk" drinking sessions - which included partying with controversial American singer Chris Brown in August - but despite descending into a dark place, he never cheated on Molly-Mae and maintained a close bond with their young daughter. "Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing. You need to get a grip of it," Tommy asserts.

"If you're in the same spot as me, where you just think that it's going to cure all your problems, it doesn't. You wake up even worse and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That's the cycle of it."

Molly-Mae has previously confessed that she doesn't have a great relationship with alcohol and rarely drinks. In her 2022 memoir, Becoming Molly-Mae, the Love Island star opens up about her mother's struggles with alcohol following her parents' separation.

Molly-Mae was just 14 when her parents, Stephen Hague and Debbie Gordon, announced their split, leaving the young reality TV star "heartbroken" and feeling like her "greatest fear had come true". "The period after my parents split was really, really hard," she candidly admits in her memoir.

She goes on to reveal how her mum started "playing catch-up in terms of what she missed out on", joining dating websites and enjoying nights out. "In that first year after the divorce, Mum really struggled. For a very short while just after the divorce, she turned to alcohol to cope with the pain of the breakdown of their marriage," Molly-Mae discloses.

"Which sort of explains why I am the way I am with alcohol - I pretty much avoid it. I associate these difficult times after my parents' divorce with alcohol being involved and my mum drinking too much - understandably, because her marriage had broken down."

The Instagram influencer also confesses that she felt she had to care for her mother for a while, describing that period as a "kind of role reversal".

Meanwhile, Molly-Mae, 25, has hinted that recent events in her relationship with Tommy, 25, have been filmed for her upcoming documentary. The Love Island star was spotted sharing a New Year's Eve kiss with her former fiancé and confirmed in a recent YouTube vlog that cameras are still capturing the "realness" of her life for Molly-Mae: Behind It All.

She even suggested that the Amazon filming crew had rushed to her home to record following a "crisis."

In her vlog, Molly-Mae disclosed: "The documentary is six episodes, and the first three drop on the 17th of this month with Amazon Prime. And then we're currently in the process of filming the secondary lot of three which will drop a couple of months later. So yeah, still filming. I had a nice break, I actually filmed for the first time again - was it last night or the night before? When a little bit of a - not a crisis broke out, but, you know, another day in the office."

The reality TV star cryptically added: "It's very light with the filming, it's very reactive and real-time, and if cameras need to come around at 10 o'clock at night to film some realness, then that's what we've got to do! " While Molly-Mae has hinted that her reunion with Tommy might be featured in the documentary, and that it's all "real," some fans were irate after discovering their NYE smooch.

The reunion of the couple has stirred up quite a debate among their followers, with some suggesting that their separation was never real and merely a tactic to garner attention. On Twitter, one fan stated: "Well she fooled everyone. Funny how they are back together now his book is out, her clothing brand and now documentary is done. Played everyone like a fool all for more money."

Echoing this sentiment, another user added: "Using the 'breakup' as PR for Maebe, Tommy's book and documentary. But snogging Tommy on NYE? Convenient! ! !" A third person vented: "IT WAS ALL A PR STUNT. Well played; So the breakup WAS fake? ? ", while another suggested: "They didn't even really split, money money money."

Despite the speculation, sources close to the situation maintain that Molly-Mae and Tommy's reconciliation is genuine, with Molly-Mae holding onto the hope that it will set the stage for a lasting future together. A confidant revealed to the Mirror: "She's never stopped loving Tommy. Everyone in Molly's circle were convinced that they had split for good and they are wary of her getting back with him because of how much he hurt her. Molly insists they're taking things slowly and still get on because of Bambi, but the truth is she has never stopped loving him and it is still her dream to marry him and have more kids."
