BBC Call The Midwife's Nancy Corrigan star confirms she's quit series after absence

Call the Midwife actress Megan Cusack has finally opened up about her character's noticeable absence, revealing that she has departed from the hit BBC show.

Having joined the cast in season 10 as midwife Nancy Corrigan, taking over from Valerie Dyer who departed Nonnatus House for a stint at the Hope Clinic in South Africa, Cusack quickly became a fan favourite.

Her character, Nancy, was charmed off her feet by pharmaceutical salesman Roger Noble, culminating in an engagement during the Christmas Special last year.

Nancy's life has been far from quiet, what with falling in love and accepting a position at a rural hospital, all of which explains why her appearances have been sparse in season 14, currently airing on BBC One.

Devotees of the series were thrilled at the prospect of Nancy and Roger's return to Poplar, hinted at towards the end of the episode broadcast on Sunday (February 23), and looked forward to their impending wedding, reports the Mirror.

However, it seems their screen time will be short-lived: Megan Cusack has made it clear that she is leaving the show and is keen to expand her horizons in theatre work.

In an exclusive chat with Radio Times, Cusack expressed her drive to challenge herself: "Sometimes, you've got to step out of your comfort zone to grow. I've learnt so much, but I'm at the start of my career, and I need to take a leap of faith."

Megan noted: "It's bittersweet, really. I've formed lifelong friendships and I get to take those with me. But when I think about not arriving on set and seeing Tim, who's part of the grips team, with his guitar hanging out of his van and serenading people at half six in the morning."

She fondly concluded: "It really has been like a family."

Before leaving for Surrey, Roger encouraged Nancy to accept the new position as it would bring her and her daughter Colette closer to him.

"It's right in the middle of my sales patch," he told his bride-to-be. "You have to take it, Nancy. You'll be nearer to me until we get married."

After Nancy's return was teased, numerous fans of Call the Midwife expressed their excitement on X (formerly Twitter). One wrote: "It looks like we're finally getting Nancy back and the wedding next week! It's only taken them all series!"

Another added: "NANCY RETURNING LOOKING STUNNING OMG," while a third said: "Well at least we know Nancy is alive."
