Doctor Who fans all say same thing as they want 'justice' after Christmas special
by Katie Palmer · Wales OnlineDoctor Who made a thrilling return to BBC One, featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the iconic Time Lord. In this latest adventure, he encountered Joy, portrayed by Nichola Coughlan, who discovered a mysterious passage to the Time Hotel.
As a sinister plot began to unravel on Earth during the festive season, fans were left in shock as a beloved character met an early demise in the episode's first half.
The unexpected death of Joel Fry's character, Trev Simpkins, a helpful employee at the Time Hotel who assisted the Doctor, sparked an outpouring of grief from viewers. @philipmoore_ expressed dismay on Twitter: "Killing Trev... when we just met him?! Justice for Trev. #DoctorWho".
@Migeman lamented: "Aww s***, not Trev, he was a good lad. #DoctorWho" and @Spaceyeurotrash posted: "Feel like s*** just want Trev back as a treat #DoctorWho".
Calls for the character's survival echoed across social media, with @grace_is_sugoi writing: "Can they just let Trev survive as a treat #DoctorWho" and @Hyukasbabe admitting: "It was my fault for getting attached to Trev #DoctorWho".
@Spaceyeurotrash humorously summed up the fleeting nature of Trev's appearance: "Rip Trev it was nice knowing you (for like 5 seconds) lol."
Towards the end of the episode, fans could not believe their eyes as Trev made a brief comeback to help the Doctor from beyond the grave.
In addition to mourning Trev, fans also felt the absence of Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, who departed the show in the two-part finale 'Empire of Death'.
@stitched_moons shared their feelings: "Missing ruby Sunday like a mf #doctorwho".
Another fan, @THHEBLACKDOG, picked up on a poignant nod to Ruby from the Doctor, tweeting: "Not him making Ruby a coffee #DoctorWho" accompanied by a crying emoji.
Ruby's absence was felt in the latest episode when the Doctor was questioned by a receptionist, "Who are you not phoning?".
"Ruby Sunday," he confessed. The receptionist probed further about Ruby's situation.
"No problem, just gotta let people get on with their lives," the Doctor replied, with a hint of melancholy.
Right at the end of the episode, Ruby was briefly seen making a phonecall to her mum.
Fans took to social media to express their feelings, with @virtualdemigod praising the casting of 'Derry Girls' star Nicola Coughlan but also sharing their disappointment at Ruby's exit.
Their tweet read: "I assume we're all upset at no more Ruby Sunday (?) but honestly I'm too busy going crazy over Nicola Coughlan as a #doctorwho companion."
Meanwhile, @rhyssuxx tweeted their approval of Coughlan's appearance: "Whoever decided to cast Nicola Coughlan in an episode of #DoctorWho deserves a knighthood."
