Liam Gallagher and David Beckham were among the famous faces to pay their respects to Gary Mounfield at the legendary musician's funeral today. The Stone Roses and Primal Scream star, known by his nickname Mani, was laid to rest in a service at Manchester Cathedral on December 22.
The musician died aged 63 last month. He was part of The Stone Roses’ classic line-up alongside singer Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren. He worked on the Manchester band’s well known 1989 self-titled debut album, which featured hits such as I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums and I Am The Resurrection.
Ian Brown was in attendance at the funeral today as he paid tribute to his late bandmate. Asked by reporters what Mani meant to him, he said: "Everything. He’s a brother to me.”
Huge figures of British music such as Paul Weller and Oasis frontman Liam were also in attendance to pay tribute. After his death last month, Liam said he was “absolutely devastated” and described the bass player as his hero.
Mani was a Manchester United fan and former players, Gary Neville and David Beckham, arrived at the funeral today to pay tribute. A cortege started at 10am from Mani's home in Stockport, which travelled to Manchester Cathedral, when he was laid to rest at a service that started at 11.30am.
