Aintree is one of the best events on Liverpool's social calendar, and this year it was particularly special for families. The Grand National Festival landed during the Easter half term this year, meaning parents could take their children to the special occasion and soak up the famous Aintree atmosphere.

Some families went all out and turned up to the racecourse in matching colours and styles. Others opted for a more casual look on the opening day of the racing festival. Despite a gloomy and wet day, young racing fans and their parents certainly made memories to last a lifetime.

While the first of the three days is typically a little quieter than the headline-making Saturday, many racegoers say it has its own charm. It's the perfect way to experience the festival at a more relaxed pace while still enjoying everything that makes it special.
