'Only Murders in the Building' Walks Away Empty-Handed at 2026 Emmy Awards

The Only Murders in the Building cast has left the building - and the 2026 Emmy Awards empty-handed.

Only Murders was up for two trophies during the Primetime Emmys held Monday, September 14, at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater. The Hulu hit was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, with Martin Short also earning an individual acting nod. The five-season series was recognized alongside Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo's Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Shrinking and Widow's Bay for Best Comedy Series, which Widow's Bayultimately won.

Short, 76, earned a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Wonder Man), Steve Carell (Rooster), Matthew Rhys (Widow's Bay) and Jason Segel (Shrinking). Rhys, 51, came out victorious. After his loss, Short pretended to rip up an acceptance speech as the Widow's Bay star took the stage.

Only Murders stars Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez as an unlikely trio who team up to investigate the mysterious deaths of their neighbors inside their New York City apartment building. Since its premiere, Only Murders has earned 21 nominations and seven wins.

The show was also nominated for Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Series, Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program (Half-Hour) and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month but lost all its respective categories. (Margo's Got Money Troubles won the wardrobe award, with the Widow's Bay creative team receiving the other two honors.)

Short, Martin, 81, and Gomez, 34, are currently in production for a sixth season of Only Murders, which will be set across the pond in England.

"I'm proud of lots of things about Only Murders, but one of the things I'm proudest of is the perception of it," Short told Deadline last month. "It's one of the loosest, happiest sets that any guest star guests on. And we get these reviews from all these famous people endlessly like, ‘Oh my God, I had the best time.'"

For season 6, the Arconia trio will be joined by the likes of David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan, Martin Freeman, Olivia Colman and Geri Halliwell-Horner.

"What's crazy is the level of the British actors we're working with. It's insane," Short gushed to the outlet. "I mean, one day it's Olivia Colman, and then David Tennant, and then it's Martin Freeman, and then it's Jennifer Saunders. It's just, as Harry Shearer once said, ‘The crème de la cream.'"

Should Only Murders return for a potential season 7, the show will reportedly head back to NYC.

Only Murders in the Building season 6 premieres on Hulu Tuesday, December 8.
