id Software’s Doom reboot may not have been big on story, but Doom: The Dark Ages is going all out to be cinematic, and its new story trailer crams in a host of plot points. Hardcore fans will be happy to hear that the trailer confirms everyone is afraid of the Doom Slayer.

Can’t wait to get your hands on Doom: The Dark Ages? This FPS prequel is still a few weeks away, but publisher Bethesda Softworks has dropped a new trailer which teases its demon-busting story.

Doom: The Dark Ages takes place long before 2016’s Doom soft reboot, and is a medieval-influenced outing that has the Doom Slayer fighting alongside his adopted brothers, the Night Sentinels. At least, that’s how prior lore set things up.

But, as revealed by the story trailer, the angelic Makyrs are just as terrified of him as Hell’s forces are. Him being sealed away prior to 2016’s Doom wasn’t a blip, he’s treated as a weapon of last resort.

The trailer, which you can watch below, also features an extended look at the game’s big bad, a demonic entity who’s reportedly named Ahzrak. It’s his machinations that lead to Doom: The Dark Ages’ conflict and he’s delightfully villainous in action.

Doom 2016 isn’t known for its talkative antagonists, but this trailer promises some scenery-chewing moments for Ahzrak. id Software has already confirmed this outing will have more in the way of story, and you won’t need to gather a mountain of lore collectables to understand it.

Naturally, there’s also plenty of action in the trailer, with the Doom Slayer hopping aboard a giant mech and a dragon. Jamie Hore previewed Doom: The Dark Ages and was impressed with some elements of the game, so we have our fingers crossed the final product can deliver.

Doom: The Dark Ages releases on May 15 and if you buy now you can snag it at a discount. If you’re looking for something else to play we have rounded up the best new PC games and the best upcoming pc games.
